Conclusion

Social problems are defiantly a huge part of this world cause when something happens in one group it is more than likely happening in many. This is why social control is so important to keep crime and illegal drug abuse under control. If we don't have great social control our society will not be great the less control society has over its self the worst it will get. Crime is only a sliver in what society does to screw up, although crime is punished the worst we still have those who act out and do wrong even if its not illegal.

Alcohol and drug abuses are on the rise every day and should not be. I have seen many people suffer from both these situations and really screw up if not ruin their own lives. People need to be more aware of abusers and need to take more action for them and get them help so they don't go to far by ruining their lives or even killing themselves. Helping people help themselves is a huge goal in my life and it should be a goal of others to since no one in this world is perfect and everyone needs someone to help them out throughout their lives.

Crime and Social Control

The one thing I really want to do after i graduate is become a police officer, that's why Chapter 4 in our Social Problems book interests me so much. This chapter is Crime and Social Control. Crime is the act of breaking the law and social control is basically preventing it and keeping society under control. This chapter was extremely interesting talking about all different kinds of crime from burglary to juvenile crimes. This chapter showed how to keep track of social control and how to enforce it by showing all the different strategies from surveys to major laws being passed from past wrong doers. This chapter was defiantly my favorite of this book because the things it showed about social control and crime happen every day and will help me in my future jobs.

A very interesting article about crime and social control can be found http://bjc.oxfordjournals.org/content/35/4/563.abstract

Another site on social control that talks about street crime and different ways of providing social control to help prevent it is http://www.historyisaweapon.com/defcon1/crimecontrol.html.

Also an interesting site http://www.nydailynews.com/news/crimersting, about the different recently dicoveried and solved crime of New York and main streem crime that have been shown on the news in the last few weeks. This website shows an in debth look at major crimes in the last few weeks.

Alcohol and Other Drugs

Chapter three in our Social Problems book for this class is about drugs and alcohol. This chapter shows illustrates many things everything from global drug abuse to local drug abuse. It talks about why people will become drug users, what types of drugs are most common or the most dangerous and also tells what people need to do if they know of abusers. This chapter doesn't just talk about drugs and people using them but also how it can affect society and how lives and families are ruined because of drugs and alcohol abuse. One thing that was in my mind while reading this chapter was that alot of drug abusers do drugs when people arent watching and in private settings and a quote from john wooden best describes this “The true test of a man’s character is what he does when no one is watching.”

Two sites that are extremely informational on drug abuse can be found here
http://www.alcoholanddrugabuse.com/  This site explaions alot of the reason people give for being drug addicts. It also show what you should do to get these people help.  The second site http://alcoholism.about.com/ shows different types of abuse, different case, and some interesting stories on alcohol and drug abuse. This site also shows what to do for abuse victims.

My Name is Dallas Sandberg, a student at the University of Idaho. I am studying Criminology and am wanting to be a police officer or have another job in law enforcement. I am from Arizona and having a lot of immigration problems and debates about our immigration laws, working in law enforcement has become a high interest tome. I am currently taking a class called social problems. This class is extremely interesting, because it breaks down the bigger problems society has today. He makes you look at each problem in depth and makes you realize what all is going on in our country today. A few of my favorite problems we have gone over this semester are Alcohol and Other Drugs, crime and Social Control, and Work and Unemployment. These subjects are daily occurrences and are going to affect what I want to do in life and wanting to be in law enforcement I am going to have to deal with these things every day. One big thing i want to do working in law enforcement is help people and according to one of the most famed basketball coaches of all time, “You can’t live a perfect day until you do something for someone who will never be able to repay you.”  Studying these social problems will help me understand and know more on how to help these people overcome their problems.
